Lee Chang Ming is an artist from Singapore working across photography, publishing, video, and writing. His practice contemplates the subjective act of looking and adopts an open understanding of photography as process, metaphor, and material. He also runs Nope Fun, an independent publisher and platform focusing on photography. He completed an MFA in Environmental Art &#38;amp; Social Practice at the University of California, Santa Cruz (2024).

		<description>Lee Chang Ming is an artist working across photography, publishing, video, writing, and printmaking. His practice contemplates the subjective act of looking and adopts an open understanding of photography as process, metaphor, and material. His current research focuses on queer ecology and disorientation in the tropics.


He is interested in many things, but here are some themes he has worked on: growing up queer in Singapore / religion and the state / historical erasure of minorities / nature as hyperreal. 
His other projects lean more toward a nondiscursive, poetic, and experimental direction, exploring ideas such as: tenderness and touch / the restlessness of youth / materiality and mortality / learning to let go.

To Turn is centered around the idea of disorientation, inspired by Sara Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology. Revisiting a personal experience of navigating the tropical jungles of Singapore during army training, the work gets lost in (rather than investigating) the messy affairs of spatial and sexual orientation. 
The artist proposes disorientation as a gesture that resists neat binaries and fixed positions by deviating from straight lines and set paths. The secondary forest, as a site charged with colonial history and military forces, becomes an unlikely space for subversion and ecological diversity, full of queer potential.


The second iteration of the project was exhibited at Künstlerhaus Dortmund (Germany), which included a full wall photographic mural. Installation images below:

The Wild consists of photos taken during walks in the tropical rainforests of Singapore while making To Turn. The photos' subsequent (dis)organisation and presentation are inspired by Jack Halberstam’s Wild Things.Publication

Chromatic is a series of experimental photograms about materiality and mortality. Film was initially accidentally soaked in sea water, destroying the images that were captured on the roll, but as a result the images created on the corroded photographic surface were abstract and painterly. The series looks at the transience of memory and the corporeality of the photographic medium.

These two works were my material reflections on the invisible labour and historical erasure in relation to the Chinese railroad workers in the US, and photoetching in printmaking as a process of transformation and removal.

Who was this unnamed graveyard for? Why was the graveyard so close to the railroad? How long had it been there?—In the mid-19th Century, thousands of Chinese migrant workers were employed to work under dangerous conditions to construct the first transcontinental railroad that runs across the US. Many died during the construction as they were tasked with doing the most precarious tasks. The railroad laid the tracks for industrialization in the American West, and it was built on the backs of migrant labor. Beneath this engineering feat is a story of racism, historical erasure, and untold narratives.—We found this graveyard near Kelso Depot in the Mojave Desert. I had hoped that visiting this grave would provide more clues about the people there, however, it only raised more questions for me. The graveyard had been marked as “Kelso Chinese Cemetery” on Google Maps, but when we visited it, there was no indication of who was buried there. To add to the mystery, why were there Christian crosses here? If indeed the grave were for the Chinese, were they converted to Christianity? Or perhaps they were buried by Christians? We also saw footprints in the sand of the cemetery. Who else had visited this place?

Conversations explores the relationship between photography, text, and subjectivity. By inviting collaborators to start “conversations” with his photographs, Lee hopes to explore the malleability of the meanings that photographs can have, and what new meanings can emerge when we remove text or add unexpected kinds of words. 

The project first began as a site-specific installation where personal photographs were placed around Objectifs’ space in an open-ended manner for visitors to encounter with in their own ways. These photos were taken over the past decade in his 20s&#38;nbsp;— fragments of memories with friends, traces of feelings and small moments he wanted to hold on to. 

In the next part of the project, he invited Samantha Yap to respond to the installation. She wrote a dual-perspective mini-story with sections of the story dispersed across the space.

In the final part of the project, Lee invited Dennese Victoria to respond to the same set of images to make a publication. The result was comfort book for nervous children. The photos were passed to Victoria without much context, who provided a textual response that weaves together fiction, poetry, and an open-ended narrative.

The project was made as part of Site Unseen&#38;nbsp;— programme started by Objectifs in 2021 that invites artists and image makers to create site-specific image-based works for spaces outside of a conventional gallery. Through this, it proposes new ways of encountering everyday spaces that have been overlooked.&#38;nbsp;

	Tree shrines have mushroomed around Singapore over the years from the jungle to industrial areas and sometimes even in the city centre. Trees have, eventually, become a refuge for abandoned deity figurines either recovered from the sea or left behind by individuals. The tree shrines scattered throughout Singapore offer an interesting insight to the everyday religious and cultural practices. The placement and type of shrines (e.g. Buddhist, Hindu) are unique to Singapore and is a reflection of our multicultural society. 

Even though the tree shrines may often be ignored by the general public, they link back to more vernacular forms of our heritage and link to our cultural roots as Singaporeans. More than just religious objects, the continued presence (and disappearance) of tree shrines in our modern city-state reveal an aspect of our diverse communities and the conflict with the State over their existence. 

This project raises questions surrounding these tree shrines: How did these tree shrines come about? Who removes these tree shrines? Why are they removed?

In collaboration with Chu Hao Pei.

A site specific work, It’s not where I belong, it’s where I live examines the unassuming deities hidden underneath the Bodhi and Banyan trees and the social dynamics of the locale. The agency is returned to the deities where we see their perspectives, showcasing the organic activities with the border between Singapore and Malaysia in the background. The migratory nature of the deities and the individuals suggests the parallel between them, reflecting a multi-layered environment in this no man’s land. 


The third iteration of the project was subsequently exhibited at Taipei Fine Arts Museum as part of a group exhibition Affect Machine: Self-healing in the Post-Capitalist Era. Installation images below:

Until Then is an exploration of what it means to be young and queer in Singapore, as seen through my personal experiences and encounters with those around me. Against the backdrop of a conservative society, the series is an intuitive mapping of our lived realities&#38;nbsp;— a restless search for belonging and intimacy. This ongoing series is simultaneously a step outward and an introspective journey: reaching out to the LGBTQ community and coming to terms with my own identity.

This project was made possible through the support of the Goethe-Institut, Ostkreuz Photographers' Agency and OBSCURA Festival through the Southeast Asian Photographers' Masterclass 2017. 

The work of all 12 participants was exhibited at OBSCURA Festival in Malaysia in conjunction with the publication we will have been young. Printed in Germany and published by dienacht (available here). See the book preview here.

Sessions is a series of artist presentations at Peninsular. Each session pairs artists, writers and/or curators with no proceeding title or text. The point of reception is discussed and framed through the period of exhibition, inviting an open reading of new relations.&#38;nbsp;
