Until Then

by Lee Chang Ming

Until Then is an exploration of what it means to be young and queer in Singapore, as seen through my personal experiences and encounters with those around me. Against the backdrop of a conservative society, the series is an intuitive mapping of our lived realities — a restless search for belonging and intimacy.

The Wild

by Lee Chang Ming

These photos were taken during walks in the tropical rainforest of Singapore as part of a larger multimedia project that looks at queerness, the environment, the body, and subjectivity. I used to navigate (and get lost) such jungles while in Singapore’s conscription army, and I have decided to revisit these places. I am interested in deliberate disorientation as an artistic gesture within wild places.

The Garden

by Lee Chang Ming

We think of parks as places of rest and leisure, to escape the hustle and bustle of fast-paced city life in Singapore and to seek refuge in nature, but in fact, these gardens are designed and built by humans and not nature. Parks provide the illusion of the natural world: tamed and pruned for human consumption.

Singapore branded itself as a “Garden City” in 1967 and “A City in a Garden” in 1998. As with many aspects of Singaporean society, even plants are not spared from the strict policies and politics. Parks as controlled environments perhaps then present an appropriate metaphor for looking at tensions between nature and man-made, natural and artifice, authenticity and authorship.

comfort book for nervous children

by Lee Chang Ming, Dennese Victoria

comfort book for nervous children is a collaboration between Lee Chang Ming and Dennese Victoria. The photos were taken by Lee over the past decade — fragments of memories with friends, traces of feelings and small moments he wanted to hold on to. The photos were passed to Victoria without much context, who provided a textual response that weaves together fiction, poetry, and an open-ended narrative.

This publication was created as the third part of Conversations, a project by Lee Chang Ming for Objectifs’ programme Site Unseen. Conversations explores the relationship between photography, text, and subjectivity. By inviting collaborators to start “conversations” with his photographs, Lee hopes to explore the malleability of the meanings that photographs can have, and what new meanings can emerge when we remove text or add unexpected kinds of words.

Virtue & Virility

by Lee Chang Ming

Virtue & Virility presents a series of images and quotes taken from various gay networking mobile apps. The quotes are taken from the “about me” sections where individuals can introduce themselves. The project seeks to highlight the intriguing ways gay men choose to present themselves in virtual space through photography and text, and looks at questions of masculinity, sexuality and self-portrayal.

The self-portraits underscore perceived societal ideals of masculinity and sexual desirability; yet their anonymity also depicts an underlying concern of privacy and stigma for promiscuously found even within the domain of queer spaces.

Staircases

By Khiev Kanel

Staircases looks at the White Building in Phonm Penh, Cambodia, which has since been demolished to make way for a casino. The seemingly unassuming site raises questions of capitalism, urban development, socioeconomics and geopolitics.

Against the backdrop of rapid development and influx of capital from foreign and local sources, Kanel Khiev’s photographs bear witness to the unrelenting changes and its effect on the place and its people.
